When you’re homeschooling, your days might be full of hands-on projects, read-alouds, field trips, and a day at your local Homeschool Co-Op. It’s rich, meaningful learning—but without a paper trail, it can be easy to forget just how much you’ve accomplished. That’s where record-keeping comes in.
Homeschool record keeping is more than just a formality—it’s a valuable tool for you and your child. Each state in the Unites States, requires different forms of education records to be kept. Regardless of your state’s requirement, I would like to encourage you to keep records for you and your child. These records will be important for your child now, but especially in the future as they think ahead to life when they leave your home.
5 Reasons You Should Keep Educational Records:
1. It Helps You Stay Organized
Whether you’re following a specific curriculum or you are unschooling, records help you keep track of what you’ve covered. From daily activities to reading lists and completed assignments, it brings clarity to your year. This information will be helpful as you evaluate the progress your child has made throughout the year and create new learning goals for the year to come.
2. It Supports Accountability
Some states require homeschoolers to maintain specific records, like portfolios, grades, or progress reports. Even if your state is more relaxed, having documentation can provide peace of mind during evaluations or when applying to colleges or programs.
3. It Highlights Your Child’s Growth
Looking back at old journal entries, math work, or artwork shows how much progress your child has made. It’s a tangible way to celebrate growth—and it builds confidence for both of you. Use it as a tool to help your child understand what they have learned and create conversations about what they would like to learn next.
4. It Helps With Planning
Keeping track of what’s working (and what’s not) helps you plan future lessons, adjust your approach, or set realistic goals. You might try a certain curriculum and realize it just doesn’t meet your child’s needs and that’s ok! Make a note and move on. That’s the beauty of homeschooling.
5. It Becomes a Keepsake (My Favorite!)
Homeschool records don’t have to be dry or formal. A well-kept binder, photo journal, or learning portfolio becomes a beautiful snapshot of your child’s unique educational journey. I personally love keeping journals and binders with direct responses and individual work from my children. It means so much more to me than a silly worksheet or textbook. Each of their personalities gets to shine and I can really dig deep to see what they truly know.
